HYDRA: THE BEST WEEKEND TRIP FROM ATHENS

Hydra is the perfect island to spend your weekend if you live in Athens because it’s one of the islands of the Argosaronic Gulf which is a small distance from the port of Piraeus. Although it is a dry place full of rocks, it is one of the most picturesque islands in Greece.

We visited Hydra at the end of September and the weather wasn’t great. The first day we wanted to walk to the monasteries up on the hills above the Hydra Town. However, just when we passed the last houses it started raining heavily!

So we decided to visit the museum of Hydra. Ηydrian costumes, memories from the War of Independence and paintings of the ships of the 1821 Greek Revolution are exhibited there. Hydriots’ ships made up two-thirds of the whole Greek fleet. More than that, Hydra offered its men to the Revolution. Admiral Andreas Miaoulis became the famous commander of the of the Greek fleet, while Georgios Koundouriotis was the first Prime Minister of the newly born Greek State from 1822 to 1827.

When the skies cleared in the evening we climbed through the picturesque streets to the top of the hill above the port to watch an amazing sunset.

For dinner, there are many nice taverns to choose from at the port and around the town. As we expected the food was simple and delicious and the prices more than reasonable.

But the best thing about Hydra is that no vehicles are allowed on the island! The only means of transport to get around are donkeys and mules. You can use your feet, of course, if you want!

All in all, our weekend trip to Hydra was an unforgettable experience and we strongly recommend it to you all!
